Pakistan and China to Sign New Deal to Restart Karachi-Peshawar Railway Project

Pakistan and China are getting ready to sign another deal at the Belt and Road Forum. This deal aims to cut the cost of the ML-1 railway project by $3.3 billion, lowering the total cost from $9.8 billion.

The updated plan divides the project into three parts, focusing on improving the railway line from Karachi to Peshawar.

In the first part, the emphasis will be on upgrading the tracks from Nawabshah to Rohri, Lahore to Multan, and Lahore to Lala Musa. These sections are important and need modernization to make the railway network more efficient.

The second part will concentrate on the sections from Kemari to Hyderabad and from Hyderabad to Multan. This is crucial for improving connectivity in these areas.

The third and final part will cover the sections from Lala Musa to Rawalpindi and from Rawalpindi to Peshawar. Additionally, upgrades will be made to the Havelian Dry Port, which is important for handling cargo.

However, the project faces several challenges. One of the main issues is securing international financing to fund the upgrades. Another significant challenge is providing a sovereign guarantee, which is a promise by the government to financially support the project. Overcoming these obstacles is crucial for the successful completion of the railway project.
